Executive Context
A public sector legislative committee partnered with Britson & Partners to deliver a specialised personal effectiveness and professional capacity programme for a cohort of legislative aides.
The intervention was designed to help legislative aides reflect on their work, enhance practical skills, and strengthen the capabilities needed for effective service. Delivered as a two-day executive training workshop in Lagos, the sessions provided a reflective environment for participants to explore productivity, communication, relationship management, and emotional intelligence as they transition from administrative support to strategic partnership.
The Institutional Imperative
Legislative aides operate in dynamic environments that require not only routine support but also operational coordination, research and analysis, stakeholder engagement, and strategic backing for their principals.
Recognising these demands, the sponsoring committee sought a structured programme that would:
- Improve productivity, task organisation, and daily workflow management.
- Strengthen emotional intelligence and handle pressure effectively.
- Enhance business communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
- Build stronger collaboration, teamwork, and professional relationships.
- Support personal effectiveness, financial readiness, and long-term professional growth.
Our Strategic Response
Britson & Partners designed and delivered a two-day leadership and capacity-building workshop tailored to the realities of legislative aides operating within government institutions.
The programme focused on core capability areas including:
- Personal Leadership and Professional Effectiveness: Encouraging participants to develop self-awareness, leadership discipline, and an understanding of the 5 Cs of Success (Capacity, Character, Communication, Collaboration, Commitment).
- Role Evolution for Legislative Aides: Exploring the progression from administrative support to strategic partnership across four distinct role levels.
- Emotional Intelligence and Pressure Management: Equipping participants with the STOP model (Stop, Take a breath, Observe, Proceed) and the five components of emotional intelligence to manage pressure under demanding conditions.
- Practical Work Skills and Tools: Strengthening task management, brief preparation, meeting coordination, and stakeholder follow-up.
- Financial Planning and Life After Service: Introducing the Orange Principle of financial management and addressing the realities of post-service transitions.
The programme combined short presentations, group discussions, role plays, case studies, and participant-led recaps to ensure practical application of the concepts explored.
Key Insights from the Engagement
The engagement highlighted the growing expectation that legislative aides serve not merely as clerical staff but as strategic partners capable of influencing legislative outcomes through research, brief writing, and stakeholder coordination.
Participants reflected on the importance of emotional intelligence, disciplined task management, and collaborative relationships in enabling aides to operate successfully within complex legislative environments.
The programme also reinforced the role of basic financial planning, post-service preparation, and continuous professional development in strengthening institutional capacity within the public sector.
